Egmore Railway Station in Madras was constructed by contractor T. Samynada Pillai at a cost of Rupees 1.4 million and was opened on June 11, 1908 as a metre gauge terminal. It is recorded that this station came up in a place where a fort was in existence. It is stated that inauguration the station’s covered platform area is greater than that of Charing Cross Station in London. Over a period it added more structures to cater to increasing demands of traffic. It handles about 150, 000 people using 35 main line trains and 118 suburban trains. For those residing in southern districts of Tamilnadu Egmore train station symbolises Madras or Chennai. This red colour gothic building with lime mortar decorations and cast iron grills is an enormously imposing structure and befits the status of Madras as capital.
