Maa Bhagavati Mahamaya and Shri Anadilinga Daneswar are the deities of two major temples of Karnagarh said to be built by Raja Mahabir Singh about 500 years ago. Karnagarh hosts a number of 17th century temples. Karnagarh was the seat of Midnapore Raj family, which saw one of the earliest peasant rebellions against the British Colonial rule. The temple deity Daneswar is depicted with an eight feet deep pit called Yonipeet (Jonipeet). The deity of Shri Mahamaya is placed on a lotus and draped in a muslin sari.
Kharagpur was the seat of King Hiramba, whose daughter Hirimba and sister of Hiramba was in love with one of five Pandava brothers Bhim. An outraged Hiramba fought with Bhim and was killed, where the current city of Kharagpur is located. It is believed that this place was ruled by Karna of Mahabharat.
The temple complex has shrines for Daneswar, Mahamaya, Yoghmaya and Hanuman. There is a welcome arch from National Highway 14 towards Karnagarh.
