Originally started operations in 1924, the Terminal 2 of this airport was
built in 2013. This is a hub for five major airlines. This oldest airport of
India is a major centre for flights to East and Southeast Asian countries. This
airport has two parallel runways with Cat II and Cat II facilities. This V
shaped structure in two tiers for arrivals and departures 104 check-in
counters, 44 immigration counters, 24 security gates, seven check-in conveyor
belts islands with in-line X-BIS sorter systems, 16 arrival carousels, 27
elevators, 16 escalators, 13 travelators and 18 aerobridges. This building’s
interiors are perceived as a single spacious volume resulting in an uncluttered
space. The landscape design is conceived as one of the biggest pieces of land
art inspired by Rabindranath Tagore. The design conceived by RMJM, a Hong Kong
based architect and design consultant in association with STRATA, the landscape
architects. The Bengali alphabets inspired by Tagore’s Gitanjali are used in
roof decoration and landscaping.
